The City of Figline and Incisa Valdarno also remembers Don Milani 50 years after his death on June 28, 1967. And it does so through a double initiative, organized in collaboration with the Don Lorenzo Milani Foundation for the day of May 14.
It begins at 4:30 p.m. when, at the Praetorian Palace (Piazza San Francesco, Figline), there will be the presentation of two volumes on the figure of the Florentine priest, in his dual role as a religious and as the founder of the Barbiana school. The first book is titled "Don Lorenzo Milani - L'esilio di Barbiana," written by Michele Gesualdi; the second, on the other hand, is titled "Processo all'obbedienza - La vera storia di Don Milani" and is signed by journalist Mario Lancisi, who will be present at the meeting.
Next, also at the Praetorian Palace, Mayor Giulia Mugnai and Councillor Mattia Chiosi will open the exhibition entitled "Barbiana and His School" (5:30 p.m.), which will remain on display until July 2. The exhibition - curated by Marco Rossi and organized in Figline and Incisa Valdarno by Cristina Bonechi and Cristoforo Ciracì - will be open on Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. (free admission). Itis thus a traveling photographic tour that presents, by themes, various aspects of the life of the small community of Mugello, to educate the children of the peasants and the marginalized and to make them understand the importance of study and knowledge. On display are about 60 images, selected from the photographic volume "Barbiana and its School. Images from the archives of the Don Lorenzo Milani Foundation," edited by Pamela Giorgi and Sandra Gesualdi, who will be present at the May 14 meetings.
"These initiatives are a tribute to Don Milani," explain Mayor Mugnai and Councillor Chiosi, "and to his ability to demonstrate that culture is an indispensable element of society, through the creation of a sui generis school. And it is precisely because of the value of his teachings that, for the past two years, we have included the visit to Barbiana in the path of remembrance that we dedicate to pupils and teachers in the area."
