It is called "The Forbidden Fruit of Knowledge" and is the initiative organized by the Single Guarantee Committee of the Municipality of Figline and Incisa Valdarno to mark Women's Day, which is celebrated internationally on March 8.
The appointment is set for 6 p.m. on March 8 at Casa Petrarca (Piazza Benassai, Incisa), the building where the poet Petrarch spent part of his childhood and reopened to the public in 2015. Two meetings are scheduled: the opening of the exhibition "The Value of Education: Female Figures in Scientific Culture from Antiquity to the 19th Century" (6 p.m.) and the concert "The Voices of Eve" (7 p.m.). In particular, the exhibition outlines a historical itinerary focused on women's education, especially in science, and women who have distinguished themselves in the cultural sphere, starting from the time when they were excluded from the world of culture and relegated to domestic life. There are five sections of the itinerary, dedicated mainly to primary and secondary school students: between myth and legend; women in Greek culture; Neoplatonism and women; women and science from the Middle Ages to the 20th century; and the excellences of recent years in the scientific field. The exhibition is organized by the Mathesis Association of Florence, a section of the National Society of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, founded in 1895 and based at the Department of Mathematics "Ulisse Dini" of the University of Florence. The exhibition will be inaugurated at 6 p.m. In attendance will be Mayor Giulia Mugnai, Councillor for Equal Opportunity, Mattia Chiosi, City Council President Cristina Simoni, and the chairwoman of the Single Guarantee Committee, Elisabetta Bargilli. The exhibition will also be open to schools in the following weeks; to book guided tours, including educational workshops, simply contact the Participation office by calling 055.9125253 or writing to c.bonechi@comunefiv.it.
At 7 p.m., however, space will be given to music and entertainment, with a performance by Donatella Alamprese (vocals), Marco Giacomini (guitar), Andrea Tinacci (clarinet) and Caterina Vecchi (stage readings) in "The Voices of Eve." This is a concert in multiple languages that will take the audience on a journey of discovery of women who, in various places around the world, have distinguished themselves in multiple areas of social life, from culture to political engagement. Examples include Hypatia of Alexandria (a mathematician, astronomer and philosopher from Ancient Greece), poet Sibylla Aleramo (also known for her advocacy of women's rights, including voting rights) and French singer-songwriter Edith Piaf. This will be followed by an apericena, offered by the municipality to those in attendance.
