Reflections on the death penalty, shows and themed performances scheduled for 30 November, 4 and 13 December
There are three days that the municipality of Figline and Incisa Valdarno dedicates to Tuscan Day, the annual event that, on 30 November every year since 2000, celebrates the abolition of the death penalty thanks to the penal reform enacted in 1786 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo.
The first of the initiatives promoted by the Presidency of the City Council will be held precisely on 30 November, in the Council Chamber of Figline City Hall, with a meeting on the subject of the death penalty (10.30 a.m., free admission). Opening the morning of reflections was the president of the municipal council Cristina Simoni, who after the initial greetings passed the floor to historian Fulvio Conti and sociologist Angela Perulli. The two professors from the University of Florence then presented some reflections on the death penalty, starting from the publication on Raffaello Lambruschini published by the municipality in the 'Microstudi' series. The meeting was also attended by students from the 'Marsilio Ficino' and 'Giorgio Vasari' institutes in Figline.
The Tuscan Day celebrations will continue on 4 December, with a triple date at the Garibaldi Theatre (Piazza Serristori, Figline). It will begin at 10.30 a.m., with performances entitled 'Scacco al boia' (Checkmate of the Executioner): a series of scenic readings, taken from texts by Stefano Massini, by the students of the 'Giorgio Vasari' High School and the 'Marsilio Ficino' Primary School. All performed with musical accompaniment and projection of images, chosen from documents and testimonies recalling the Leopoldine reform.
This will be followed by the performance - freely adapted from Enzo Brogi 's book - entitled 'Altre direzioni' (Other directions), by the cultural association 'I Folli' (directed by Linda Lucherini and Caterina Meniconi; original music by Simone Baldini Tosi). It is a show that focuses on social issues that are often overlooked: from gambling to cannabis, from prison to the sexuality of the disabled. Four devastating social and emotional issues that we insist on hiding, despite the fact that they have to do with the sphere of human rights.
While this first theatrical performance will be held in a reduced form, during the course of the evening it will be possible to attend its replica in an extended version, starting at 9.30 pm. In addition, shortly before the performance, the President of the City Council Cristina Simoni, the Mayor Giulia Mugnai and the President of the Regional Council, Eugenio Giani, will present the 2015 Bambagella Award to a person who has particularly distinguished themselves for their activities. On the same evening, a plaque will also be presented to the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini, who this year celebrated the first 50 years since their foundation.
The initiatives celebrating the Festa della Toscana will conclude on 12 December, with a conference entitled 'That certain idea of reform from Pietro Leopoldo to the Constitution', in the company of Prof. Fabio Bertini (historian and coordinator of the Tuscan Committees for the Risorgimento). Theappointment is set for 5 p.m. at Casa Petrarca (in Piazza Benassai, Incisa). The mayor of Figline and Incisa Giulia Mugnai, the president of the municipal council Cristina Simoni and the councillor for Culture Mattia Chiosi will also be present (free admission).
