It touches its 10th edition this year Alchimie Teatrali, the theatrical review that the City of Figline and Incisa Valdarno--in collaboration with the association Prima Materia of Montespertoli, Conkarma, Foto d'Arte Lab and Circolo Fotografico Arno--dedicates to the enhancement of youth productions by involving schools, associations and theater companies in the area.
The 2018 edition opens immediately with a novelty: on Tuesday, April 17, in fact, there will be a launch event with a performance of "Antigone" by the students of the Accademia del Dramma Antico of Syracuse (abbreviated Adda), who will stop in Figline for their tour in Italy for the enhancement of ancient theater towards the younger generations. It is a lecture-performance that on the morning of Monday 16 will involve school girls and boys, while at 9 p.m. on Tuesday 17 it will be open to the public with free admission.
Instead, the festival will officially begin on Friday, May 11, at 9:30 p.m. with "The Birds" by the theater workshop of Figline's Marsilio Ficino Community College, a play loosely based on Aristophanes' comedy of the same name. The second event, however, is set for Thursday, May 17 at 9:30 p.m. with the Masaccio Lab of the Masaccio Cultural Association, which will stage "You Promised."
Instead, on May 24 (9:30 p.m.) space will be given to an out-of-competition event: the theater workshop curated by Dimitri Frosali will stage "La Mandragola," included in the Sliding Theaters project that the Metropolitan City of Florence has financed to promote the social (and cultural) inclusion of young people. The social cooperative Coop21 has collaborated by following a group of young people who will take the stage at the Garibaldi for the first time by being part of the chorus in the play conceived by Dimitri Frosali.
The competing shows will be back on May 31 ("The Breakfast Club" from the Diesis Teatrango theater school in Bucine), June 4 ("The Eumenides" from the Si fa teatro workshop) and June 7 ("Ironheads" from the Vasari Institute theater workshop in Figline).
On June 17, the closing night, the awards ceremony for this edition's winners will be held by a jury of experts including Dimitri Frosali, Serena Naddi, Isabella Valoriani, with three important new entries: Alice Spisa (winner of the Ubu Prize as best actress under 30 in 2013), Ciro Gallorano (young actor and director of the Cantiere Artaud company) and Carlo Menicatti, who, through the Conkarma association, has followed a group of young people throughout the season who have been able to meet the great actors who have passed through the Figlino theater by analyzing their shows.
Two prizes are up for grabs this year: the Golden Leorso and a cash prize of 1,000 euros; the Silver Leorso and a prize of 500 euros. The experts on the jury will also be able to decide to suggest to the municipal administration which of the six shows in the review should be included in the Garibaldi Theater's 2018/2019 Prose Season (non-subscription) or to propose replication at other theaters in the area.
Tickets can be purchased at the Garibaldi Theater box office (Piazza Serristori, 055.952433, www.teatrogaribaldi.org): full price 8 euros, reduced 6 euros (up to 19 years old, over 65, Ficino, Rovai and Bibliocoop library cardholders), free up to 14 years old; season ticket for 6 shows at 25 euros for full price, 20 for reduced.
