After the novel chosen during the first meeting, "Everything Calls for Salvation" by Daniele Mencarelli, the reading chosen for December is Giorgio Bassani's"The Golden Glasses."
Scheduled for commentary on Monday, January 9, 2023 at the Marsilio Ficino Public Library in Figline.
THE PLOT.
A young Jewish student in the Faculty of Letters (he believes himself to be Bassani) tells the story through first-person narration: Fadigati, already an established doctor in Ferrara, is known both for his skill, sophistication and culture, and for his alleged and latent homosexuality, which costs him marginalization from his high social class (a similar fate, albeit caused by different reasons, to that which will later befall the narrator of the story, following the enactment of the racial laws by the fascist regime).
He begins taking the same morning train to Bologna as the narrator and his friends. On the train, among the university boys, he will also meet the reckless and selfish Deliliers: a young and rebellious man ready to gamble everything in life, who does not hesitate to use his shamelessness, charm, and beauty to bewitch the doctor himself and make fun of him, exploiting him for his own selfish desires.
THE AUTHOR.
Bassani was born in Bologna on March 4, 1916.
In 1956 he published "Cinque storie ferraresi," with which he won the Strega Prize.
In 1958 he published "Gli occhiali d'oro." In 1987 "Gli occhiali d'oro," a film directed by Giuliano Montaldo, was released.
He died in Rome on April 13, 2000.
The reading group is organized by the municipal libraries of Figline and Incisa Valdarno to enable readers in the area to share thoughts, emotions and reflections arising from a reading chosen in common with other enthusiasts. In fact, these are not group readings but shared readings that will be held until June 2023.
