Wild West
At the end of the 1800s, Italy had recently become a single state, but in the countryside nothing, or almost nothing, has changed: the Maremma's cowherds, the mounted herdsmen, tend their cattle as usual and watch out for the brigands who infest the area. Penna, a capable and taciturn cowherd, together with his son Donato has just had Occhionero, one of the most ruthless outlaws, arrested. Meanwhile, the very young Gilda, the daughter of a coalman, meditates revenge against Occhionero's accomplices, who are guilty of using violence against her; as the bandit prepares to escape from the barracks, manned by the vain Orsolini, the Wild West Show arrives in Italy, the grandiose spectacle of Buffalo Bill, who along with gunmen and Indian chiefs travels the world in search of profit and fame. And as the Show moves to Florence, a horse theft intertwines the lives of the protagonists, triggering the chain of events that will lead up to the dramatic final confrontation. Wild West is at once an adventure novel, a choral novel, a tapestry where small lives stand out vividly and unforgettably against the great web of History. With passion and wonder, Daniele Pasquini transports the American West to Tuscan soil, and turns it into daily legend, to be handed down by word of mouth, to be listened to with the heart.
This book is for those who know that when a path ends a new one must be invented, for those who have devoured Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove, for those who are chasing something unseen and far away, and for those who feel a fragrant mist rising from the earth, the smell of impending spring, a green sap shining like a promise of glory.
Daniele Pasquini was born in 1988 in the province of Florence and works as a press officer in the publishing world. He made his fiction debut in 2009 with Io volevo Ringo Starr, followed by a short novel and a collection, all published by Intermezzi Editore. His short stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies. In 2022 he published for SEM A Shipwreck.
